It is headquartered in the Faculty of Information Technologies at the Kazakh-British Technical University.
The Smart City lab was opened under the program of Innovative solutions for large urban systems based at KBTU in Almaty. The lab was launched in 2020. Almaty Smart City Lab's activities are aimed at training IT personnel and solving urban problems using digital solutions. It was created in partnership between IGLUS, an international company based in Switzerland and the Department of Digitalization of Almaty City.
Among the objectives of the Lab is the efficiency measurement of the urban systems in terms of infrastructure development (transport, ecology and health, quality of life) through digitalization. Another important task of the laboratory is to train specialists for the Master's degree program Smart City and Smart Systems. Digitalization of the megalopolis has become one of the priorities of the city's development over the past two years. The new educational program should become a starting point for the export of IT solutions and "brains" not only for Almaty, but also for Kazakhstan.
